Kid activities at the Island Whale Festival

The Island Whale Festival is returning to Phillip Island from 5–7 of July 2019 to celebrate the migration of some of the ocean’s most majestic creatures. There are plenty of kid activities at this year’s Festival, including whale inspired arts and crafts, writing workshops, stories, whale songs and whale spotting will of course. This is a great way for kids to appreciate the wildlife and natural habitats of Phillip Island and the Bass Coast region.

Bass Coast Whale Discovery Trail

Head to the viewing points along the Bass Coast and Phillip Island, and follow the whale trail in search of whales. The signage along the way provides an insight into migratory whales and their behaviours. Maps available at Visitor Centres, Cowes Cultural Centre, Newhaven and Inverloch.

Smoking Ceremony – Womin djeka miram biik biik

The Traditional Owners of the land, the Bunurong people of the Kulin Nation will provide a Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony.

Whale Art- Cushion making

Whale out of Water

Kids can climb into the life-size replica of a humpback whale while learning about their journey from Antarctica to Queensland. Kids can learn how to protect these beautiful creatures form climate change and plastics in our oceans.

Whale Songs and Stories – Creative Collaborations

Families will be invited to participate in creating collective ocean soundscapes and learning whale songs from Indigenous and non-Indigenous musicians.

Spot a Whale

Learn how to spot a whale from Phillip Island’s lookouts at Cape Woolamai and Pyramid Rock with local scientists.

Microplastics Beach Clean

Families can come together and help make a difference to tackle the issue of marine debris at the home of the penguins – Summerland Beach.

Whale Betayil Parade

Families can head to the Heritage Centre and join in the community parade to celebrate the whales with singing, dancing and decorations. The Parade will feature singers, musicians and street bands from Gippsland, Invy Horn Jam and Boomulele.

Seaweed Sally marine education workshop
