Developing a dynamic balance for bike riding is not an easy thing to do. Perseverance, spills, tears and band-aids all precede that exhilarating and over all too soon first independent ride.
There are a couple of different ways you can look at developing the coordination and balance skills needed to master bike riding. In my youth a tricycle or a small bike with training wheels was the way to go, this was great for getting an idea about steering and developing leg strength to push the pedals. The transition to two wheels was still problematic though because the balance wasn’t there.
Now there are small, lightweight balance bikes which simplify the process by shifting the focus onto balance and steering control. Balance bikes are stripped back removing the pedals and all extra support wheels.
My 4-year-old recently started using a Red Racer Little Kruzer balance bike and he loves it.
Being small and lightweight (30kg) it is easy for him to hold the handles, straddle the seat, sit, stand, walk, run and push off for short glides. It is fascinating to see how quickly he’s developing a feel for the movement of the bike.
The 100% Australian owned family company Kidz Factory has cleverly designed the handle bar’s with a limited 30-degree arc, this makes it safer to steer by reducing the risk of jack-knifing while building a feel for manoeuvring with body weight.
I really like this approach to learning to ride and I love that this bike uses a sturdy and environmentally friendly FSC Certified Birchwood Plywood frame and an ergonomic saddle that’s easily adjustable as your child grows.
