WIN: Midsumma Rainbow Families Hub

From 21–25 January 2020 The Melba Spiegeltent and Circus Oz will be transformed into the Rainbow Families Hub, providing a safe and inclusive space specifically designed for LGBTIQA+ families and allies to celebrate this Midsumma.

Rainbow Families Hub will host five jam-packed days of family entertainment – craft workshops, activities, live comedy and cabaret –celebrating all families: those made, chosen and found. Featuring some of Melbourne’s best family-friendly performers, artists and storytellers, the program is designed for you and your family to drop in for an hour, a morning or afternoon, or come for the whole five days and enjoy all the free and ticketed events on at The Melba Spiegeltent.

Kids can develop a wide range of circus skills with these introductory workshops. Learn a wide range of circus skills, ranging from tumbling to juggling, human pyramids and trapeze. This class is perfect for those who want to have fun, make new friends while learning new skills and working on fundamentals such as balance, coordination, strength and teamwork. Suitable for ages 6-8 with medium fitness level.

Acclaimed creators of Children are Stinky bring you a brand-new show performed by powerhouse duo Kyle Raftery and April Dawson (Lunar Circus, Circus Oz) and directed by Malia Walsh (heaps of stuff). This trio of artists love world-class acrobatics and create high flying tricks that will make your head spin.

An action-packed circus spectacular, Brass Monkeys will excite, motivate and get your toes tapping. Complete with live music, acrobatics, a zillion hula hoops and making the impossible possible. Perfect for little kids and grown-ups who like a big brass belly laugh!!!

Rainbow Families Dance Club (All the Queens Men), Queerspawn (Maeve Marsden), Over 60/Under 10 (Sarah Ward and You), Sing-a-long Dragtime (Frock Hudson & Miss Jay), All In Family Circus (Presented by Circus Oz), Teens Flying & Fun (Presented by Circus Oz). Topping off the week is the brand-new circus show Over the Rainbow Cabaret, hosted by Tessa Waters.

There are also FREE activities at Rainbow Families Hub, including daily storytime sessions where well-known LGBTQIA+ and allied leaders, comedians and public figures will read a story that inspired them as a child or they wish they had read to them as a young person. The line-up includes feminist writer, broadcaster and public speaker Clementine Ford, emerging queer elder and Ngarigo man Peter Waples-Crowe and Margot Fink, the Executive Director of Transgender Victoria. There will also be FREE craft workshops where kids can make their own family flag, an item of wearable art or magazine – all created to encourage kids to tell their own stories.
