A delightful, family-friendly opera celebrating the power of finding your voice.
Have you ever heard a lyrebird’s call? Known for their astonishing mimicry, lyrebirds can sound like everything from kookaburras to camera shutters. But in this heartfelt Australian story, one lyrebird takes their tricks too far—and is banished from the flock, cursed to mimic forever.
Alone in the bush, the lyrebird meets a colourful cast of Aussie animals, from jittery emus to a cunning cat, and learns that being different might be their greatest strength.
Featuring students from the University of Melbourne and accompanied live by the Victorian Opera Chamber Orchestra, The Lyrebird’s Voice is a vibrant new work developed by composer Peter Rutherford and six talented youth participants of the 2023 New Work Opera Studio. With a libretto and lyrics by Jayde Kirchert, the opera blends humour, warmth, and important themes of identity and self-expression.
