The Australian Ballet returns to the Ian Potter State Theatre at Arts Centre Melbourne this October with Peter Wright’s The Nutcracker, marking its first performance on the iconic stage since its major refurbishment in March 2024.
One of the most beloved works in the classical repertoire, The Nutcracker has been a treasured festive tradition for generations. Peter Wright’s production, first created in 1990 and staged by The Australian Ballet in 2007, is known for its elegant storytelling and rich connection to classical tradition.
Set to Tchaikovsky’s iconic score, including the famous Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, the ballet follows Clara, a young girl whose Christmas Eve gift of a nutcracker doll transports her into a dreamlike world of battling mice, dancing snowflakes, and the magical Kingdom of Sweets.
The production features John F. Macfarlane’s detailed sets and costumes, which bring Clara’s journey vividly to life from her Edwardian home through to the shimmering Land of Snow and colourful Kingdom of Sweets. With its large ensemble scenes, classical variations, and unforgettable music, The Nutcracker remains a highlight of The Australian Ballet’s repertoire and a much-anticipated seasonal favourite for Melbourne audiences.
