Discover Ancient Egypt for Kids at NGV, a free exhibition designed to introduce children to the wonders of ancient Egypt through fun and educational activities. Running alongside the Melbourne Winter Masterpieces® exhibition, Pharaoh at NGV International, this interactive exhibition offers young visitors and their families a chance to explore the art and culture of ancient Egypt.
Ancient Egypt for Kids is on display from 14 June – 6 October 2024 at NGV International
Featuring ancient Egyptian objects from NGV’s Collection, including a decorated coffin lid over 2,500 years old, the exhibition transforms the space with gold walls and floor-to-ceiling hieroglyphs.
Designed to evoke the mystery and wonder of ancient Egyptian culture, kids can discover a golden funerary head covering and an elaborately decorated coffin illuminated to reveal imagery of gods, goddesses and hieroglyphic inscriptions. The artistry and craftsmanship of ancient Egyptian society come to life through these objects.
Families will also encounter an inscribed stone slab depicting a family worshipping, offering insight into the customs and beliefs of ancient Egyptian people.
Kids are invited to unravel the mystery of ancient hieroglyphs and create their names using pencils and paper, turning their visit into a unique keepsake.
In a specially designed play zone, kids can engage in hands-on activities such as building and rebuilding pyramid formations with blocks. These activities entertain while providing rich learning experiences, allowing young visitors to interact with art, culture, and design innovatively.
For those eager to dive deeper into history, a multimedia interactive quiz on the geography of ancient Egypt, the Nile River, and the significance of the pharaohs, gods, and goddesses awaits.
