Featuring works by both international and Australian artists, including Rembrandt, Goya, Hockney, and Claudia Moodoonuthi, the exhibition is organised with cats on one side and dogs on the other. Themes such as working roles, cultural symbolism, and everyday life are examined across paintings, textiles, photography, and fashion.

Highlights include the classic Chat Noir poster, Gainsborough’s portrait of an officer with his hound, and Atong Atem’s self-portrait Maria of Mars, which reinterprets the traditional lapdog motif in a modern context. At the end of the exhibition, visitors can enjoy the Pet Portrait Gallery, where they can see their own pet featured at the NGV. By uploading an image of their cat or dog, visitors can have their pet’s portrait projected onto the gallery wall.
