GodzillaFest will take over ACMI this spring with a four-day festival celebrating the 70th anniversary of Godzilla, running from 31 October to 3 November 2024.

GodzillaFest is set to transform ACMI into a hub of kaiju excitement, offering an exciting mix of free and ticketed events. The festival will feature films, discussions, trivia contests, video games, and an after-hours Halloween party. This all-inclusive celebration will explore Godzilla’s significant impact on screen and popular culture, shedding light on the creation of this legendary figure — 70 years after the original movie premiered.

On November 3, 1954, Godzilla emerged from a deep slumber and stomped into cinematic history with the release of Ishirō Honda’s groundbreaking film in Japan. Audiences were enthralled by its storytelling and visual effects, while the film’s timely anti-nuclear message, embodied by Godzilla, resonated deeply. The international release propelled Godzilla to global fame, making it the first character to launch an international film franchise.

Halloween Monster Bash

Enjoy a monstrous night at the museum with live music from local DJs, Godzilla-inspired crafts by artist Kitiya Palaskas, and a specially curated food and drinks menu. Let out your inner Kaiju with your best Godzilla pose at the tokusatsu-inspired miniature city. Test your skills on Godzilla pinball and vintage video games, and explore ACMI’s centrepiece exhibition, The Story of the Moving Image — see how many times you can spot Godzilla!

Movie Marathon and Trivia

Experience the epic power of Godzilla with a curated selection of three films showcasing the monster’s iconic place in cinema history. Between screenings, demonstrate your knowledge of the Godzillaverse with special trivia rounds hosted by comedian Alex Hines. Featured films include Godzilla (1954), Mothra vs. Godzilla (1964), and Godzilla vs. Hedorah (1971).

Screenings

ACMI Cinemas will screen five key films from the Godzilla franchise, including the original 1954 film that introduced the monster. The lineup features Godzilla (1954), Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla (1974), Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack (2001), Shin Godzilla (2016), and Godzilla vs. Kong (2021). Over the weekend, you can enjoy Godzilla’s iconic battles on the big screen.
