Coinciding with the world-premiere The Picasso Century is a free NGV children’s gallery exhibition titled Making Art: Imagine everything is real. Families are invited to explore a range of hands-on activities and multimedia experiences inspired by methods of working invented by some of the most recognised European artists.
While learning about some of the leading artists of the twentieth century in Europe, children will make their own surprising works as they explore collage techniques, write poetry and play surrealist games and turn everyday materials into large-scale sculptures.
Spanish artist Remedios Varo and the Surrealists were interested in ideas about the mind, such as exploring dreams and unconscious thoughts. They often played a game called Exquisite Corpse, to create strange creatures made up of different objects and body parts. Children have an opportunity to make their own creatures, by using the illustrations on the digital screens.
French artist Georges Braque is thought to be the first artist to make a paper collagé. Braque was sharing an art studio with his friend Pablo Picasso, who later became excited to experiment with collage. Both artists used different materials such as wallpaper, newspaper, cardboard and paper. Children can experiment with colour and shapes when they create their own collage, which can be turned into a digital animation.
Russian artist Natalia Goncharova enjoyed trying lots of different things. She was a painter, printmaker, illustrator, performer, and costume designer. Goncharova was friends with many poets and writers, who often spent time together writing and drawing to make books of poems. In this activity children can draw a portrait of a special person or pet in their life and then write a poem about them.
Make a Sculpture
Artist Pablo Picasso learnt paper-cutting and folding techniques from his father when he was young. Picasso could transform flat pieces of paper or cards into three-dimensional sculptures. Children can make their own sculptures by taking large shapes and turning them into three-dimensional sculptures.
