The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia is currently hosting REKOSPECTIVE: The Art of Reko Rennie, a thoughtful retrospective showcasing Reko Rennie’s largest collection of work to date. Featuring over 100 pieces, the exhibition covers his career from early explorations in street art to his more recent, large-scale works.
Rennie’s use of bright, bold colours brings a distinct energy to his work. He integrates street art principles with contemporary art forms and traditional Kamilaroi designs. His visual language, characterised by vibrant diamond shapes and repetitive patterns, reflects his interest in merging cultural traditions with modern materials and techniques such as printmaking, sculpture, painting, and neon.
Exhibition highlights include Remember Me (2020), a large striking text-based light work that spans over 15 metres. Originally commissioned by Carriageworks and now part of the NGV collection, this installation serves as a memorial for Aboriginal communities affected by colonial conflicts.
Another key work, Initiation OA_RR (2021), is a three-channel film in which a customised Holden Monaro is driven through Melbourne’s west, accompanied by an operatic score from Yorta Yorta soprano Deborah Cheetham AO.
Rennie’s work offers a nuanced perspective on First Nations identity and contemporary art, encouraging reflection on Australia’s colonial history through his distinctive and vivid approach.
REKOSPECTIVE: The Art of Reko Rennie is on at The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia, Fed Square until 27 January 2025. Entry is FREE
