The Australian premiere of WAITRESS is coming to Australia for the first time, bringing the beloved Broadway hit to local stages with a heartwarming story of hope, humour and resilience. The Melbourne season opens at Her Majesty’s Theatre from 1 May 2026, before heading to the Sydney Lyric Theatre from 1 August 2026.
Inspired by the film by Adrienne Shelly, WAITRESS follows Jenna, a small-town waitress and talented pie maker, as she navigates a difficult marriage and unexpected opportunities for change. With the support of her fellow waitresses, she begins to imagine a different future filled with possibility, friendship and self-discovery.
The Australian cast features Natalie Bassingthwaighte as Jenna, alongside Gabriyel Thomas as Becky and Mackenzie Dunn as Dawn. Rob Mills plays Dr Pomatter, with John Waters as Joe. The production also stars Keanu Gonzalez as Earl, Gareth Isaac as Ogie, John Xintavelonis as Cal, and Annie Aitken as Jenna Alternate, supported by a strong ensemble cast.
With music and lyrics by Sara Bareilles, WAITRESS blends emotional storytelling with memorable songs, exploring themes of resilience, second chances and finding your voice. It has become a global favourite since its Broadway debut, known for its warmth, humour and relatable characters.
