The Future & Other Fictions – ACMI Exhibition

ACMI’s latest exhibition, The Future & Other Fictions, is an intriguing exploration of screen culture’s power to shape a hopeful and imaginative world. Co-curated by Amanda Haskard (Gunai/Kurnai), Chelsey O’Brien, and director and futurist Liam Young, the exhibition brings together over 180 pieces from film, video games, and screen-based art.

From Academy Award-winning costumes from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever to the intricate miniature sets of Blade Runner 2049, and concept art from Cyberpunk 2077 and The Creator, the collection highlights the creativity and vision of some of the industry’s most innovative minds.

Björk’s dreamlike dress and headpiece from The Gate are among the standout pieces, accompanied by works from artist James Merry and director Andrew Thomas Huang.

Interactive zones invite visitors to design personalised posters, which are showcased through projections on departure, adding a creative touch to the visit.

The exhibition also features new moving image commissions, including Hannah Brontë’s Birth of Dawn, which reflects on the cycles of life, and Liam Young’s After the End, a narrative imagining a future where fossil fuels are banned, and communities rebuild a rewilded Earth.
