Discover a world of design and creativity at Up, Down and All Around: Daniel Emma for Kids, the latest NGV Kids Exhibition, brought to you by the talented Australian design duo, Daniel To and Emma Aiston of Daniel Emma.
Up, Down and All Around: Daniel Emma for Kids marks Daniel Emma’s first-ever design project that is specifically tailored for kids. The exhibition showcases the studio’s iconic furniture and decor, as well as experiential zones with both multimedia and hands-on design challenges that invite kids to create their very own designs and discover the role of design in the world they live in.
These zones – Inspiration Train, Build ’em Up, Funny Face Maker and Stack a Snack aim to inspire kids to unleash their creativity and encourage young minds to see design possibilities in unexpected places, such as food items or geometric shapes.

INSPIRATION TRAIN
At the heart of the exhibition lies the drawing-based activity, Inspiration Train. The activity takes inspiration from the conveyor belt-style sushi trains, where participants can sit around and observe a wide variety of plates of food as they glide by. Inspired by the provocation – “You see a peanut; we see a table!” – kids are challenged to take a piece of fruit, ice cream or a bowl of fried rice and turn it into a design drawing for a chair, a table lamp or whatever their imagination conjures.
BUILD ’EM UP
Build ‘Em Up activity is an engaging way to explore the world of design and construction. This hands-on activity encourages young kids to play, stack and build with colourful sets of upholstered geometric forms designed by Daniel Emma. Similar to playing with building blocks, kids are challenged to design and build new objects with these spheres, rectangular prisms and cubes.
FUNNY FACE MAKER
Funny Face Maker is a fun hands-on activity that has been created by Daniel Emma to inspire creativity and playfulness in young kids. This interactive activity invites kids and their families to create endless funny faces by selecting and arranging from Daniel Emma’s sets of sparkly and colourful shapes.
STACK A SNACK
Stack a Snack is a playful multimedia activity that invites kids to explore what happens when traditional cake ingredients are replaced with unexpected materials such as green grass, red lava, grey concrete, and more. Through the exploration of unusual materials and the use of all their senses, kids can experiment and make new combinations in order to design their very own digital layer ‘cake’.
