Description

When we opened Scienceworks in 1992, our vision was a place for young people to play with science. We linked Melbourne's industry, heritage and applied technology in one place: a new building looking across the arena to the century-old Pumping Station, all under the grand arc of the West Gate Bridge.

Today, Scienceworks is bursting with things to challenge curious minds of all ages. In just one visit, you can stroll among the gigantic machines that kept the city running, enjoy electrifying theatre in the Lightning Room, let your little ones roam safely in enclosed spaces, wander through our immersive exhibitions and drop into deep space in the Melbourne Planetarium.

Like our visitors, we're always asking questions. How does it work? Why does it do that? How is our world changing? Join us on an expedition to understand the mysteries of the universe and our everyday lives.

At Scienceworks you'll find:

  • Ground Up: Building Big Ideas, Together - an exhibition for babies to five-year-olds where curiosity is rewarded around each bend with surprising and intriguing sights, sounds and touch sensations.
  • Beyond Perception: Seeing the Unseen- a ground-breaking and unconventional permanent exhibition designed for teenagers.
  • Melbourne Planetarium - Join us on a journey across the night sky! Sit back and enjoy the wonder of the stars regardless of the time of the day - or weather!
  • The Lightning Room - Featuring spectacular demonstrations, high voltage equipment and charismatic presenters, there’s no better place to spark your curiosity.
  • Think Ahead - With more than 200 objects from the past, the present and the speculative future, this exhibition blends technology with hands-on experiences. It will inspire you to research, think creatively and share your ideas.
  • Sportsworks - a place to leap, run, throw and row. You can race against Cathy Freeman, try out for soccer goalkeeper, and zoom down the slopes in our snowboarding simulator. You'll also find out why sports have their own specialised footwear, balls and other gear.
  • The Scienceworks Amphitheatre, where our highly engaging presenters host of a range of interactive science shows
  • The Spotswood Pumping Station - Discover the fascinating story of one of Australia's most important industrial heritage sites.
