Disney: The Magic of Animation opens at ACMI

Disney: The Magic of Animation has opened at ACMI, as part of the Melbourne Winter Masterpieces series. This unique exhibition showcases the magic that goes into making some of the world’s most iconic Disney films. Five hundred carefully selected pieces from the Walt Disney Animation Research Library in Los Angeles are on display, including sketches, drawings, paintings and concept art.

In 1928 Disney Studios released Steamboat Willie, the first talking animation featuring Mickey Mouse. This film was one of a long line of innovations that have kept Disney at the forefront of excellence when it comes to animation.

The exhibition provides a fascinating insight into what goes on behind the scenes when creating animations. Each film is a massive undertaking, pushing the technical and creative boundaries continually keeping viewers new and old engaged.

Classic original sketches of Donald Duck, Mini Mouse and Mickey Mouse adorn the walls.

Behind-the-scenes footage shed light on the creative process from concept, story and character development, storyboarding to final production. There are so many well-loved characters and films referenced in the exhibition, including Snow White, Pocahontas, Dumbo, Bambi, 101 Donations, The Jungle Book, The Lion King, Mulan, Moana, Ralph Breaks the Internet, Tangled, Zootopia, Frozen, Sleeping Beauty, Beauty and the Beast and many more.

Each film has included new technical innovations from early Stereophonics sound, award-winning orchestral soundtracks right through to computer-generated graphics.

Disney: The Magic of Animation Exhibition is a must-see exhibition for all Disney fans. It’s such an important celebration of all the achievements of the Walt Disney Studio over the years. Walking throughout the space, you’re sure to find multiple pieces of art that make you reminisce and smile.
