I’d been looking forward to experiencing Rain Room since it opened in August 2019 in the purpose-built Jackalope Pavilion that is perched above the Prince Hotel carpark in St Kilda. This mesmerising art installation will awaken your senses.

The Jackalope Pavillion was designed to represent a giant cloud and on arrival, the friendly staff explain how Rain Room works and how to achieve the best experience with kids.

Rain Room – continuous rain pouring

The 100 square metre darkened room has continuous rain pouring from the roof. The key is to walk as slow as you can throughout the space. The motion sensors pick up on your movement which stops the flow of rain where you stand.

Your rain-free space allows you to be in the midst of the downpour and be dry. It feels surreal to be indoors in the rain, the room is darkened with a bright light at one end that adds a sparkling effect to the rain.

Each session lasts for 20 minutes, you can leave via the exit doors during the session or stay for the whole time.

Inside Rain Room

My 3-year-old son was so excited to see the rain, that he let go of my hand and ran circles around the space, loving every minute of it until he realised how drenched he was. I found it hard to move slowly, so I also got a little wet, but there were plenty of people who didn’t have a drop of water on them. The kid’s reaction to the sound and sensation of water pouring all around them but not on them was fun to watch, it’s definitely a unique experience.

Definitely bring spare clothes for kids under 5 years and perhaps also for the brisker adults (you know who you are, skip the morning coffee!).
Book in early as tickets sell out fast.
