Small Ideas discount vouchers for families launched in 2014 by local Melbourne mum Belinda Small. Offering discounts up to 90% it has become the go-to family discount app for Melbourne, Sydney and soon to be Queensland too.
Belinda took time out of her busy schedule to talk to Kiddiehood about her Small Ideas journey.
I started Small Ideas 5 years ago after pretty miserable circumstances. My husband sustained a heart attack and spent months at home. Our son was only 10 months at the time and our income diminished drastically.
I spent a lot of time talking to other mums and I learned that it’s tough for many families out there after going from 2 incomes to 1 or even just the cost of entertaining kids. I started Small Ideas to help parents discover all the family-friendly activities out there, but more importantly to help them be able to do more activities for free or a fraction of the cost.
I have so many parents contact me saying that instead of counting their pennies and only doing one or two activities they are now able to do so much more and that keeps me inspired to continue growing it.
We don’t charge businesses to participate, that way they are able to put their very best discount forward to the customer. This means we are adding new businesses throughout the year and the beauty of the digital membership is they just appear automatically.
At this stage, you can purchase Small Ideas Melbourne or Sydney and get hundreds of deals. But if you purchase just Melbourne there is a Visit Sydney, Visit Qld and Visit Perth section where you will get the top attractions in each state including theme parks.
Everyone loves a freebie so we have some FREE family passes which are how you get your $34.95 back straight away, people love these. Then we have 2 for 1s which apply to attractions like Sea Life Melbourne Aquarium, Sand Sculpting Australia, Melbourne Star and more. We have up to 50% off leisure centers, indoor activities and outdoor activities to keep families busy no matter what the season.
The discounts last for 12 months.
There are over 500 discounts in the Melbourne edition and most are one use, however, there are many that are valid every month, so once you use them they grey out then reappear for use from the 1st day of the following month. The movie discounts and candy bar discounts are unlimited throughout the year.
We will soon expand into Queensland.
I started this business because of my family so I try to keep them involved as much as I can. My kids love to give their tick of approval for every activity we feature in Small Ideas, often they come with me to meetings. Juggling the business and my kids during school holidays is my number one challenge. Fortunately, my customers are very understanding and know that just like them I am a mum first and foremost. I can call on ‘nonna’ for support and we do enjoy short family trips to spend quality time together but I rarely go ‘offline’.
Start off as a hobby and test it before investing any money into it. Be adaptable and listen to your audience. There’s no point in creating a product if the only one who likes it is you. Be patient it takes time to build a brand.Digital Membership is $34.95 and is valid for 12 months from the time of purchase. Buy membership.
