Train of Lights – Puffing Billy Railway

Puffing Billy Railway’s much-loved Train of Lights experience returns to the Dandenong Ranges this winter, transforming the historic steam train into a moving light spectacular. Now in its fifth year, the popular winter event combines the charm of the iconic heritage railway with immersive lighting effects, live music, and cosy winter atmosphere.

Passengers will embark on a 2.5-hour return journey travelling from Lakeside Station to Gembrook aboard Puffing Billy’s open-sided carriages. As dusk settles across the forest, the train comes alive with dazzling colours, moving light displays, and illuminated patterns that dance across the carriages and surrounding landscape as the steam train winds through the historic narrow-gauge track.

At Gembrook Station, passengers can enjoy a 55-minute stopover filled with winter treats and entertainment. Visitors can warm up beside open fire pits, enjoy hot chocolate and snacks, listen to live music, and capture photos of the beautifully illuminated train. Puffing Billy volunteers will also be on-site throughout the evening, adding to the festive atmosphere.

The Emerald and Gembrook CFA will once again host a sausage sizzle during the event, with proceeds supporting the local brigades. Hot and cold drinks, along with additional snacks, will also be available for purchase at Gembrook Station.

The return journey offers a completely different perspective of the light show, allowing passengers to experience the glowing displays from the opposite side of the train as they travel back through the Dandenong Ranges.
