This impressive $15 million purpose-built vertical wind tunnel located in Essendon Fields was opened in August 2019 by former Australian freestyle skydiving champion and CEO of iFLY Australia, Nir Davidson.

THE GOAL OF IFLY IS TO GET PEOPLE OF ALL AGES AND ABILITIES UP IN THE AIR AND HAVING A GREAT TIME, INCLUDING THOSE WHO MAY BE UNABLE TO PARTICIPATE IN TRADITIONAL SKYDIVING.

Book your flight online and be sure to fill out the waiver before arriving to save time. iFLY asks all flyers to come in an hour before your flight, which is a great idea it gives you the chance to watch other flyers.

The flyers will be called up to attend a briefing with the instructor, where they will watch a quick video guiding you through the process of how to get the best experience out of your flight. There are 4 main hand signals that flyers need to know – legs straight, legs bent, head up and enjoy yourself. The instructor will make these hand movements during the flight to show you how to position your body. Ideally, you want straight legs with an arched back.

Next, the instructor will fit your flight gear. A flight suit is worn, goggles, head sock, helmet and earplugs. All flyers must wear lace-up shoes.

All flyers then sit in an airtight area next to the tunnel and wait for the previous group to finish. Depending on your package most flyers get 2 x 1-minute flights. My kids had 2 x 2-minute flights each. They said that they were pretty tired from the 2-minute flights, but watching from outside the longer flyers had more time to master the art of flying. Depending on how steady you are in the wind tunnel the instructor will let you free fly without assistance.

All spectators can watch the flying from outside the wind tunnel you can get pretty close to the action, which is great when you’re watching your kids fly.

After finishing this experience, I’ve come to the conclusion that my kids are little daredevils! They were so excited by the sensation of floating on air and flying to the roof of the wind tunnel was a highlight. They were physically exhausted but loved every minute of it. It’s such an amazing opportunity for kids to experience the sensation of skydiving without having to jump out of a plane.

The experience takes approximately 1 hour 45 mins including all training. Flyers can be as young as 3 years old, but I would recommend ages 6 and up. Flyers really need to understand how to position their bodies while flying.

My kids left iFLY Melbourne buzzing with excitement and haven’t stopped talking about the experience. Next time I’ll need to organise a mums catch up at iFLY.
