Winter Wonderlights at Sovereign Hill is one of Victoria’s most popular winter attractions, transforming the historic gold rush town of Ballarat into a glowing night-time wonderland. Running from 26 June 2026, this immersive seasonal event blends heritage, storytelling, live entertainment, and spectacular light projections for a full day-and-night experience.

Winter Wonderlights Highlights & Experiences
Shining Streetscapes (Main Street Light Show)
One of the signature highlights of Winter Wonderlights at Sovereign Hill is the transformation of Main Street into a large-scale light projection show. During the evening, the historic façades become a moving canvas of light, sound, and storytelling. This year’s theme brings the Industrial Revolution to life, with projections of steam, sparks, machinery, and glowing forge imagery layered across the buildings. The experience is enhanced by a synchronised soundtrack that builds atmosphere and drama, along with storytelling elements that connect Ballarat’s gold rush history with its industrial past. Multiple showings run throughout the evening session from 5:45 pm – 7 pm and 8:45 pm – 10 pm.
Snowfall Experience
The snowfall experience adds a playful winter atmosphere to the historic streets of Sovereign Hill. While Ballarat does not typically experience natural snowfall, specially produced foam snow is used to create a magical winter effect that drifts across Main Street and surrounding areas. Timed bursts of snowfall occur throughout the evening program from 5:45 pm – 7 pm and 8:45 pm – 10 pm
Fairylight Walk (Speedwell Street & Brightview Gardens)
The Fairylight Walk offers a quieter and more immersive experience, guiding visitors through lantern-lit historic streets and gardens. This experience runs from 4:30 pm – 7 pm, with Speedwell Street cottages softly illuminated with fairy lights

Brass Band Performances
The brass band performances add sound, movement, and tradition to the Winter Wonderlights experience. Performed by members of the Sovereign Hill Fire Brigade, the music brings a unique historical twist to the gold rush setting, with live brass renditions of seasonal and winter-inspired pieces. Performances take place from 4:40 pm – 5:30 pm along Main Street
Arts & Craft Activities
The Arts & Craft sessions provide a hands-on creative experience for families and children during the daytime program. Held inside the Carver & Dalton Auction Rooms, these activities run from 11 am – 6 pm and encourage visitors to engage with traditional craft techniques inspired by the 1850s setting.
Theatre Performances (Victoria Theatre)
Live theatre plays an important role in the Winter Wonderlights program, with performances staged in the historic Victoria Theatre. Shows run throughout the day from 11 am – 7 pm (varies daily), with performances including magic shows, interactive historical storytelling, guided tours with special effects, and family-friendly pantomimes. Each performance is designed to complement the broader gold rush narrative, blending humour, drama, and audience engagement. As showtimes change daily, visitors are encouraged to check the foyer blackboard upon arrival to plan their experience.

St Nicholas’ Grotto
St Nicholas’ Grotto offers a festive, family-focused experience located at Post Office Dam. This experience runs from 2 pm – 4 pm and 5 pm–7 pm, providing visitors with the opportunity to meet St Nicholas, take festive photos, and share Christmas wish lists. The experience blends traditional Christmas storytelling with the historic goldfields setting, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere that is especially popular during the school holiday period.
The Diggings After Dark
The Diggings After Dark experience transforms the daytime gold panning area into a dramatic evening environment that reflects life on the goldfields after sunset. This immersive experience runs from 5:30 pm – 7 pm, with soundscapes, storytelling, and staged historical scenes that recreate the unpredictability of gold rush life. Visitors may encounter reenactments such as police raids, spontaneous sing-alongs, and ambient storytelling moments across the landscape. This is one of the most atmospheric parts of Winter Wonderlights and adds depth to the historical narrative.
Festive Retail Experience
Throughout Winter Wonderlights, Sovereign Hill’s retail spaces are open during standard event hours from 10 am – 7 pm (day) and during evening sessions from 5 pm onwards. Visitors can browse handcrafted decorations, locally inspired souvenirs, winter clothing, and exclusive seasonal items, including the Sovereign Hill Ugly Christmas Sweater. The retail experience extends the festive atmosphere beyond the light displays, allowing visitors to take a piece of the event home with them.
