From the moment you step onto the trail, there are wow moments at every turn. The 2026 experience feels bigger, brighter and more immersive than previous years, showcasing an incredible level of artistic talent from First Peoples, Australian and international creatives.

Set within one of Melbourne’s most iconic green spaces, Lightscape offers a unique blend of nature and technology. As you wander through the illuminated pathways, the gardens come alive with colour, movement and music, creating a sensory experience that feels both immersive and peaceful.

One of the first standout installations is Layers of Country by Wurundjeri artist Mandy Nicholson. This intricate illuminated artwork takes visitors on a journey through Country, celebrating culture, connection and storytelling through light. Nearby, visitors can admire guling (orchid season), a beautiful collaboration between the Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria Orchid Conservation Program and Culture Creative, featuring glowing orchid displays that perfectly complement the natural beauty of the gardens.

Throughout the trail, visitors will encounter glowing sculptures, interactive installations and carefully designed lighting displays that respond to the gardens’ natural environment. One of the most mesmerising is Firefly Field by Dutch artists Toer. Thousands of shimmering points of light mimic the movement of fireflies, creating an enchanting landscape that feels almost magical as it dances across the darkness.

Another highlight is The Wilderness Within by artist Betty Sargeant. Suspended lanterns illuminated with microscopic imagery from ecosystems around the world reveal the hidden beauty of nature, transforming scientific imagery into a stunning work of art.

Families are sure to love The Light Orchestra by Culture Creative and Filament. This interactive installation allows visitors to step up and conduct a dazzling display of lights. Watching the lights flicker, brighten and fade in response to the music was a joy, and it was wonderful to see both children and adults eagerly taking their turn at leading the performance.

One of the most visually striking sections of the trail is the Neon String Tunnel. Created by Culture Creative and Above & Beyond Productions, the electric colours burst through the darkness and weave amongst the trees, creating vibrant patterns.

Visitors will also experience wiinj (fire), a powerful installation celebrating the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung practice of cultural burning. Through light and storytelling, the artwork highlights how fire has long been used to care for Country, regenerate native plants and maintain healthy landscapes.

Another unforgettable feature is Bifröst by French collective Pitaya. Stretching 40 metres in length and towering overhead, this immersive tunnel of animated light is inspired by the mythical bridge connecting worlds in Norse mythology. Walking through the ever-changing colours feels like stepping into another realm.

At the heart of Lightscape is the spectacular Water Fountain Show, which once again serves as the centrepiece of the experience. Colourful jets of water soar into the night sky in perfect synchronisation with music, creating a breathtaking display developed by Oracle Liquid and Twenty20 Creative

Other highlights include Dragonflies by Michael Young, featuring illuminated dragonflies that appear to float effortlessly amongst the gardens, and Light as a Feather by Pyrite Creative, where glowing feathers gently drift through the air, creating a peaceful and dreamlike atmosphere.

My personal favourite installation was Mycelium Network by Custom Fibre Optics. This fascinating display combines glowing mushrooms with intricate fibre-optic roots that appear to pulse and communicate beneath the ground. The effect is magical, bringing to life the hidden underground networks that connect and sustain forests.

As the trail nears its conclusion, visitors are treated to Night Parrots by Chalk River Labs. This award-winning projection sculpture celebrates one of Australia’s most elusive birds through vibrant projection mapping, colour and sound. It provides a beautiful finale to an evening filled with creativity.
