From 19 – 30 August 2026, Now or Never returns to Melbourne, transforming the city into an immersive playground of art, technology, music and big ideas. While much of the festival is designed for adults, families can discover plenty of experiences to explore together.

Spread across Melbourne’s laneways, riverside spaces and iconic landmarks, the festival encourages you to wander through the city after dark, discovering interactive installations, digital art, projections and sound experiences around every corner. Many of the outdoor experiences are free, making it an easy night out for families looking for something a little different.

Melbourne Town Hall Facade & Flinders Street Station Facade

One of the festival’s most beautiful installations transforms two of Melbourne’s most recognisable buildings into flowing waterways.

Created by First Nations artist ENOKi, the large-scale projections celebrate the rivers that have sustained First Peoples for thousands of years. Native fish, turtles, birds and aquatic life glide across the historic façades, creating an artwork that is both visually stunning and quietly powerful.

Evan Walker Bridge

One of the most atmospheric installations at the festival, The Falls Before Us transforms Evan Walker Bridge into a mysterious cloud of drifting mist.

Walking through the fog creates a memorable sensory experience, while the subtle plant-derived scent adds another unexpected layer. Although younger children may simply enjoy running through the mist, older visitors can appreciate the environmental themes behind the artwork.

PRESENCE

Fri 21 Aug — Thu 27 Aug 2026
Melbourne Town Hall

One of the festival’s signature experiences, PRESENCE surrounds visitors with synchronised lasers and immersive sound. The constantly shifting beams of light create geometric shapes that seem to float through the room, making you feel like you’ve stepped inside a science fiction movie. It’s visually spectacular and likely to be one of the festival’s most talked-about installations.

Families should note that the intense lighting effects may not suit everyone, particularly younger children or those sensitive to flashing lights.
