In the Heights Melbourne Review – A joyous Musical Experience

Broadway’s smash-hit musical In The Heights has arrived in Melbourne, and what a joyous and powerful production it is. The show opened at the Comedy Theatre last night, bringing with it an explosion of colour, energy, and heart.

Created by musical mastermind Lin-Manuel Miranda (Hamilton, Moana), In The Heights was his debut work, and it’s easy to see the early genius that would shape his future successes. Following sold-out seasons at the Hayes Theatre and Sydney Opera House, this Melbourne run plays for a limited six weeks only.

This production grabs your attention from the opening moments and doesn’t let go. The combination of high-energy choreography, moving storytelling, and infectious music had me engaged from start to finish.

Set over three days in New York’s Washington Heights, the story follows a close-knit Latino community on the brink of change. It’s a place filled with hope, dreams, and struggle, where residents chase the American Dream while trying to hold on to their culture, identity, and each other.

The individual stories are carefully connected, reflecting the strength of the community — from Nina, the Stanford student torn between opportunity and family, to her parents, who have sacrificed everything to support her education. From the salon sisters sharing gossip and grit, to the beloved Abuela Claudia, who anchors the neighbourhood with her warmth and wisdom. There’s Usnavi, the charismatic bodega owner (small supermarket), who dreams of returning to the Dominican Republic but is torn by his love for the people and place he calls home.

The cast delivers standout performances across the board. Ryan González (Moulin Rouge!) is warm and charismatic as Usnavi, balancing humour and heart beautifully. Olivia Vásquez (West Side Story) brings intensity and depth as Vanessa. Mariah Gonzalez shines as Nina, portraying her internal conflict with softness and strength, while Ngali Shaw as Benny is a powerful presence on stage. Steve Costi is a highlight as Sonny—hilarious, confident, and an absolute dynamo on the dance floor. Vanessa Menjivar and Tamara Foglia Castañeda are terrific as the salon duo Daniela and Carla, bringing sharp comic timing and strong vocals to their roles.

Helpmann Award-nominated Amy Campbell choreographs a dynamic blend of hip hop, salsa, and Latin-inspired street dance with energy and precision. Under the direction of fellow Helpmann nominee Luke Joslin, the production maintains a well-paced flow that keeps the audience engaged. The music combines Latin rhythms, including salsa, merengue (a lively dance and music style from the Dominican Republic), and rap, into a vibrant score that perfectly complements the story and onstage movement.

I loved In The Heights! It’s a well-crafted celebration of identity, community, and the idea of home — a must-see for anyone who enjoys musical theatre.
