The NGV is hosting Yayoi Kusama’s largest-ever exhibition in Australia, showcasing the work of the renowned contemporary artist. As part of this exhibition, families can enjoy Kusama for Kids, featuring the interactive Obliteration Room. This large-scale installation invites children and families to contribute to the artwork by adding bright, colourful dots to the white furniture, objects, and surfaces in the room.
Over time, the colourful dots will gradually cover every surface, transforming the room into a vibrant, immersive display. It will be fascinating to see the completed transformation by April 2025.
Kusama, known for using dots to cover various surfaces in her art, refers to this process as “obliteration” – the complete destruction of every trace of something.
Kids can also explore free Yayoi Kusama installations at NGV International, including Waterwall, where a colourful surprise awaits before even stepping inside the gallery. Visitors can touch the water, take photos, and begin their Kusama journey.
The Dancing Pumpkin, a five-metre-high bronze sculpture, is another highlight, reflecting Kusama’s childhood love for pumpkins.
The Narcissus Garden, featuring over a thousand silver balls, creates a magical experience where children can crouch down and see their reflection mirrored in the spheres.
Relaxed Sessions for Kusama for Kids are offered, providing a calmer environment with fewer people and reduced sensory input. These sessions are suitable for all ages, including children with autism, disability, or chronic illness conditions. Tickets for relaxed sessions will be released two weeks prior to the event.
