The Author Behind My Brilliant Career

Stella Maria Sarah Miles Franklin, professionally known as Miles Franklin, was a pioneering Australian author and feminist. Born in rural New South Wales, Franklin drew on her experiences of 19th-century outback life to create her debut novel, My Brilliant Career, written at age 16 and published at 21. The novel shocked early audiences with its frank exploration of feminism, independence and rural life, establishing Franklin as a fearless literary voice.

Determined to follow her own path, Franklin never married. Instead, she dedicated her life to writing, mentoring emerging Australian authors and advocating for women’s creative expression.

Her influence continues today through the prestigious Miles Franklin Literary Award, celebrating excellence in Australian literature.

The Story on Stage: My Brilliant Career

My Brilliant Career follows Sybylla Melvyn, a headstrong  young woman growing up in 1890s rural New South Wales, who dreams of becoming a writer and living life on her own terms. Faced with financial hardship, social expectations and the pressure to marry, Sybylla must navigate the tension between independence and romance as she works out who she wants to be.

The musical adaptation, developed through Melbourne Theatre Company’s NEXT STAGE Writers’ Program, brings Sybylla’s journey to life with contemporary music, humour and expressive movement. While staying true to the heart of Miles Franklin’s novel, the production adds a modern perspective that makes the themes of feminism, ambition and self-discovery feel immediate and relatable.

The Cast

The cast of My Brilliant Career is exceptional, and it’s clear they enjoy working together, which brings a wonderful chemistry to the stage.

Kala Gare returns as Sybylla Melvyn, delivering a performance full of charm, cheek, and determination. Her solo numbers are both empowering and memorable, capturing Sybylla’s hopes for independence and the frustrations of societal expectations. Kala’s sharp comedic timing adds humour to the role, while her emotional honesty ensures the character’s depth is never lost.

Raj Labade shines as Harry, Sybylla’s love interest. His tender, angelic voice, especially during guitar-backed numbers, perfectly conveys both his affection for Sybylla and his own gentle, grounded personality.

The ensemble cast skilfully takes on multiple roles, creating a lively and engaging stage world. Standout performances include Cameron Bajraktarevic-Hayward, whose comedic timing and energetic dance routines provide hilarious, show-stealing moments. Melanie Bird, who seamlessly switches between characters while delivering stunning, versatile vocals and Victoria Falconer, adding both energy and depth as musical director and ensemble performer.

Set Design

The set design by Marg Horwell is a standout feature of the production, cleverly blending period authenticity with modern creativity. The stage begins as a minimalist depiction of rural outback Australia, with hay- and straw-covered floors capturing the harsh, drought-affected landscape.

As the story unfolds, the set transforms into more elaborate and imaginative scenes, including the grand ballroom at Caddagat. Here, dangling chandeliers and playful design elements reflect the wealth, flamboyance and theatrical energy of the moment. The thoughtful transitions between sparse and richly detailed settings help bring both the historical world and the present-day feel of the musical to life.

Why You Should See It

My Brilliant Career is more than a stage adaptation, it’s a thoughtful exploration of independence, creativity and personal choice.

The themes remain highly relevant, particularly Sybylla’s refusal to follow the life expected of her. Her journey reflects the challenges many people still face when balancing personal ambitions with relationships and family expectations.

Grounded in Australian culture yet relatable for modern audiences, the musical feels both timeless and fresh. It’s a production I genuinely enjoyed and would happily recommend.

It’s also a show I would love my teenage daughters to see, as a reminder that it’s okay to follow your dreams, even when obstacles stand in the way.
