I recently had the chance to see Alice in Wonderland at the Athenaeum Theatre Melbourne, a production that has toured across Australia, entertaining audiences with its creative adaptation of Lewis Carroll’s classic tale. With well-designed costumes, creative puppetry and effective stage sets, the show captured the essence of Wonderland.
The performance included all the key characters: Alice, the White Rabbit, the Mad Hatter, the Cheshire Cat, the Queen of Hearts, as well as Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum. From the very beginning, the audience is drawn into Alice’s journey through Wonderland, encountering a variety of intriguing characters, each brought to life by a skilled cast.
A particularly memorable moment was the inventive set design that made Alice appear to shrink—achieved by handing her progressively larger ‘Drink Me potion’ bottles. This clever and effective touch added a sense of wonder to the storytelling.
The production was structured in seven scenes: Down the Rabbit Hole, Advice from the Caterpillar, Tweedle Dum & Tweedle Dee, A Mad Tea Party, A Rattle Battle, and A Game of Croquet. Each scene progressed at a steady pace, though at times it felt slightly rushed. Running for 60 minutes, the performance was a good fit for families, though I would recommend it for children aged 8 and up, as some younger audience members seemed restless during quieter moments.
