The Talented Mr. Ripley – A Gripping New Adaptation Hits Melbourne’s Playhouse Stage

Joanna Murray-Smith’s new stage adaptation of The Talented Mr. Ripley has arrived at Melbourne’s Playhouse, Arts Centre Melbourne, bringing Patricia Highsmith’s iconic psychological thriller to life with intensity and a sharp modern sensibility. Presented by the Sydney Theatre Company, the production runs at the Playhouse until 23 November 2025, following its acclaimed world premiere in Sydney earlier this year.

Murray-Smith’s version captures the stylish menace and seductive danger of Highsmith’s 1955 classic, which has fascinated readers and film audiences for decades. Set in the glamorous world of 1950s Europe, The Talented Mr Ripley follows Tom Ripley (Will McDonald), a young man desperate to escape his modest beginnings. When he is hired by wealthy industrialist Herbert Greenleaf (Andrew McFarlane) to retrieve his wayward son Dickie (Roman Delo) from Italy, Ripley becomes entranced by Dickie’s effortless charm and wealth — and soon decides he will do whatever it takes to claim that life for himself.

Will McDonald (Heartbreak High) is compelling as Tom Ripley. He brings a subtle, unnerving charisma to the role, balancing Ripley’s insecurity and ambition with chilling precision. Roman Delo (Bump) is equally magnetic as Dickie Greenleaf, his carefree charm masking a dangerous arrogance that fuels Ripley’s obsession. Claude Scott-Mitchell (The Last Anniversary) delivers a grounded and empathetic performance as Marge Sherwood, whose growing suspicion adds emotional depth to the unfolding tension.

The ensemble cast — featuring Faisal Hamza (House of Gods) as the lively Freddie Miles, Andrew McFarlane as the commanding Herbert Greenleaf, and Johnny Nasser as the persistent Inspector Roliveri — contribute to the production’s richness and pace.

Visually, The Talented Mr Ripley is a triumph. Set designer Elizabeth Gadsby crafts a fluid and cinematic world. The moving wall that gradually closes in adds a sense of claustrophobia as the story tightens, while the boat scene — where Dickie meets his fate — is executed with ingenious stagecraft. The boat dramatically rises toward the ceiling as Dickie plunges beneath the water, his descent both graceful and haunting. The nightclub scene, illuminated by cascading crystal lights, captures the glamour of Ripley’s adopted world.

Steve Francis’s sound design and score heighten the suspense, mixing the cool sophistication of 1950s jazz with an undercurrent of dread that mirrors Ripley’s unraveling psyche.

The adaptation is thoughtful, tightly constructed, and layered with psychological insight. It explores identity, morality, and the intoxicating lure of privilege. Fans of The Talented Mr Ripley, whether from the original novel or the 1999 film with Matt Damon, Jude Law, and Gwyneth Paltrow, will find this stage adaptation both faithful to the story and engaging in its fresh presentation.

The Talented Mr Ripley is playing at the Playhouse, Arts Centre Melbourne, until 23 November 2025. The performance runs for 2 hours with no interval. Recommended for audiences aged 15 and over. The production contains strong language, mature themes including violence, herbal cigarette use, theatrical haze, strobe lighting, and simulated blood.
