The Lord of the Rings – A Musical Tale in Melbourne

The Lord of the Rings – A Musical Tale is now showing at Melbourne’s Comedy Theatre, bringing J.R.R. Tolkien’s legendary fantasy trilogy to life on stage in a single, ambitious production. Condensing the sweeping journey of The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King into one musical is no easy feat, yet this adaptation succeeds with imaginative staging, expressive performances, and a talented ensemble of actor-musicians.

This unique retelling blends immersive storytelling, live folk-inspired music, and dynamic physical theatre to reimagine the world of Middle-earth. From the moment you arrive, the experience begins – the theatre foyer is transformed into the Shire, complete with bunting, party decorations, and character interactions as part of Bilbo Baggins’ eleventy-first birthday celebration. Live music sets the tone before the show even starts, creating a welcoming and festive atmosphere for audiences

The story begins in Hobbiton, as Bilbo passes on his mysterious gold ring to Frodo. What follows is a journey across Middle-earth, through Rivendell, Moria, Rohan and Gondor, to the dark lands of Mordor. Frodo and his loyal friends face countless trials in their mission to destroy the One Ring and defeat Sauron.

What sets this new musical adaptation of The Lord of the Rings apart is its use of live, on-stage music performed by a cast of actor-musicians. The performers play a variety of instruments throughout the show, adding energy and immediacy to each scene—a performance style that feels refreshingly intimate for a production of this scale.

Laurence Boxhall delivers a standout performance as Gollum, capturing the character’s internal conflict with impressive vocal range and physical nuance. Terence Crawford brings weight and wisdom to the role of Gandalf, while Ruby Clark (Rosie) shines with clear, emotive vocals. The enduring friendship between Frodo (Rarmian Newton) and Sam (Wern Mak) forms the emotional core of the show, portrayed with sincerity and depth.

The production features a strong cast, including Andrew Broadbent (Elrond), Hannah Buckley (Pippin), Stefanie Caccamo (Arwen), Rohan Campbell (Boromir), Jeremi Campese (Merry), Rob Mallett (Strider), Connor Morel (Gimli), Conor Neylon (Legolas), Jemma Rix (Galadriel), Ian Stenlake (Saruman), and Laurence Coy (Bilbo), supported by an ensemble of more than 30 performers.

The set design and visual effects make clever use of props and lighting. Notable moments include Gandalf’s fall into the Mines of Moria – portrayed through rippling black fabric and lighting – and an impressive giant spider prop in the second act. The orcs, outfitted with gas-mask-inspired costumes, offer an eerie post-apocalyptic touch.

There are some areas where the show could be refined, particularly in the costume design for the Elves. Adding pointed ears, longer wigs, and more elaborate fabrics would enhance the believability of characters like Galadriel and Legolas.

Running for nearly three hours (2h 55m), The Lord of the Rings – A Musical Tale is an epic experience, recommended for older children, teens, and adults. While the show may be intense for younger audiences due to its dark themes and dramatic staging, fans of Tolkien’s universe will find much to enjoy.
