Last night, we attended our first Water Lantern Festival at Queens Park in Moonee Ponds, Melbourne. It was a moving experience — sharing messages, watching lanterns drift across the water, and taking a moment to pause. It felt personal and connected, with families and individuals coming together in a thoughtful way.

Upon arrival, each participant received a Water Lantern Festival kit containing a lantern to decorate, a pack of conversation cards, and affirmation cards. We were encouraged to write messages of hope, dreams for the future, or personal reflections. My kids each created something unique — one wrote positive affirmations, another added how they were feeling, and one quoted their favourite song lyrics. The activity encouraged open conversation and quiet mindfulness, making it perfect for all ages.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to the water. Music played softly in the background, and the park transformed into a tranquil space. One by one, families released their lanterns into the water. Watching the lanterns drift across the water was a calming and moving experience.
The moment invited stillness, connection and reflection. Sitting by the water and reading some of the messages written by others was deeply grounding and emotional.

Organisers describe the Water Lantern Festival as an event that supports healing, connection and celebration — and after attending, I can absolutely see why. Whether you are looking for a moment of personal reflection, a way to honour a loved one, or a chance to set new intentions, this event offers a gentle space to pause and reconnect.
